Is the diamond cut the most important factor that determines the value of the diamond?
Diamond cutting technique has a very long history, not much has changed in diamond cutting technique in the last 500 years or so, despite the development in the technology, in science and machinery in the last 100 years. The cutting principles are still pretty much the same and professional cutters are still very sought for, earning huge salaries.
The basic idea of diamond cutting is to give a diamond a maximum possible brilliance, and if a diamond cutter has achieved this then he has achieved the perfect cutting. Even one tiny mistake can turn out to be very big one as for instance making a cut too deep or too shallow that in the end will cause less brilliance to the diamond because the light will leak on both sides of the diamond, making the diamond less valuable.
Diamond cutting skill requires a lot of experience and a lot of training to give the very best possible results. Diamond cutters first needs to observe the diamond, and the way on which diamond refracts to the light not only make the perfect cut, but also to use the most of the diamond and in the best possible way.
Many diamond professionals will tell you that the diamond cut is the most important factor that determines the value of purchased diamond. This is only partially true because all the 4C's must be considered, which are: cut, carat, clarity, color, and every one of these factors has significant impact for the final price of the diamond.
It is true that brilliance of the stone is the factor that gives the diamond its recognizable brilliance and sparkle, and without proper cut the diamond will not look pretty regardless of clarity, color and its size in carats. So from this point of view diamond cut is the most important factor that will determine the beauty and visual impression of the diamond.
